If X opens in a corner and O answers in the centre, X still holds a drawing line; if O answers on an edge, X can build a fork and win. Hard mode plays all of those responses correctly, so the usual result is a stalemate.

The practical goal on this difficulty is therefore to hold the draw: take the centre or a corner, respond to every threat immediately, and never leave two lines open. If you want a win you can force, drop back to medium and work on forks first—the same technique is what hard mode is defending against.
