How to unscramble letters

How to unscramble words

Start by counting letters and looking for common endings such as -ing, -ed, or -er. Those endings narrow the search more than any other clue, because a five-letter set ending in -ing is really a four-letter word plus a suffix you already know.

Next, pull out the letters that are rare in English—Q, X, Z, J, and often K and W. If your jumble contains one of them, the answer almost certainly uses it, and words that do not are easy to eliminate. Our tool confirms every possibility so you can compare lengths and pick the word that fits your puzzle.

A worked example

Take the letters E, R, T, I, C. Counting gives five letters, and there is no rare consonant to anchor on, so start with structure: the set contains both I and E, which points toward a short vowel cluster. Try the common ending -IC first, leaving E, R, T for the front of the word. That yields critic—and once you have a candidate, check that every letter is used exactly once.

Working from the ending backwards is faster than shuffling the letters mentally, because English words are far more predictable at their tails than at their heads.

Exact matches versus partial matches

This unscrambler matches words that use exactly the letters you enter—no extras, none missing. That strictness is deliberate: when you are solving an anagram or a crossword, a word that only uses some of the letters is a wrong answer, not a near miss.

If you suspect the answer should be longer or shorter than anything in the results, the letter count is usually where the mismatch is. Remove a stray letter you may have typed twice, or switch to the Word Finder, which lets you search by pattern and length instead of demanding an exact fit.

Where the word list comes from

Results use a standard English word list rather than a live dictionary service, so the tool works offline in your browser and returns instantly. Proper nouns, abbreviations, and regional slang are deliberately missing. If a word you expect is not listed, it is usually because it is a name or a variant spelling rather than because the search failed.
