Anagrams, clue reading, and letter patterns

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another. For example, listen and silent are anagrams, and so are astronomer and moon starer. Use this solver when a crossword or trivia clue gives you scrambled letters and you need the possibilities rather than a single guess.

How to solve an anagram step by step

  1. Count the letters. The length of the answer is the strongest constraint you have, and it rules out most candidates immediately.
  2. Find the vowels and consonants. Sets with four consonants and one vowel behave very differently from balanced sets—knowing which you have cuts the search space in half.
  3. Look for the rare letters. A single Q without a U, or an unexplained J or Z, is almost always part of the answer.
  4. Try prefixes and suffixes. Un, re, in, pre, and common endings like -ing, -tion, and -able often assemble themselves once you spot them.
  5. Verify by letter count. Every candidate must use each input letter exactly once—no more, no fewer.

When to use the filters

The optional filters matter most when the clue already tells you something. If a crossword crossing gives you a seven-letter answer starting with RE, set the length and the prefix before you search—you will usually get one or two results instead of dozens.

Suffix filters work the same way. Many puzzle answers are a base word plus a standard ending, so filtering on -TION or ABLE lets you solve the short part of the answer first and check the ending second.

Anagrams of phrases

Multi-word anagrams need one extra step: count the total letters across the whole phrase, ignoring spaces, and search for that many letters at once. Short words inside the phrase are usually decoys—the answer tends to reuse the uncommon letters, not the vowels that appear everywhere.

For everyday puzzle play, single-word anagrams are what you will hit most often, and this solver handles them directly. When you want to explore partial matches instead, the Word Finder is the better instrument.
